Few
jellies can match the brilliant crimson-red color of this coronate
scyphozoan. The flattened bell with 16 marginal lappets has a thick
central disc and a distinct annular furrow. It reaches a diameter of about
5 cm. The 8 tentacles alternate with 8 rhopalia. The simple
cross-shaped mouth has 4 lips and connects with a dark red stomach. Eight
gonads with a dark red color have a round or triangular shape. This is a
deep-water species, and has been collected with mid-water trawls below 800
meters off southern California (San Clemente Basin) and
Hawaii. There is some uncertainty as to the correct species name,
hence the question mark.
