Central California is a Mecca for a wondrous diversity of mammals and birds. Harbor
seals and sea lions are among the most abundant, frolicking to the delight of shoreline
viewers. Sea otters find comfort and food in the canopy of giant kelp, as do marine
birds such as terns and egrets. Beyond the kelp, whales, dolphins and various
types of diving birds take advantage of the bountiful harvest of fishes, krill and other
prey. Wetlands, like Elkhorn Slough near Monterey Bay, also host a splendid array of our
furry and feathered friends. |
